How to Build a Reading Habit
It was in my late twenties that I began to enjoy reading; even then, my reading was on and off. Although I loved it, I was only sometimes a regular reader. I often attempted to set reading goals, especially at the beginning of every year, but then I quit. I wondered how people could love reading so much that they could devour so many books throughout their lives. Maybe it's the culture they were raised in or a habit my parents didn't instill in me. However, there are definitely ways to improve or even begin reading if you aren't already; it's never too late. It's been something I've been working on for a while, and I've finally mastered the habit of reading.
My life has improved in many ways because of my regular reading habits over the last few years. I feel inspired, comforted, and excited whenever I pick up a book. There are a variety of books available for every type of reader, no matter what their lifestyle or personal interests may be. Reading regularly has also reduced my stress, improved my vocabulary & writing skills, and strengthened my memory & focus.
If you are interested in becoming a bookworm and making it a regular habit, I can help you with some tips below.
Choose books you will enjoy. There could be many reasons why you have not enjoyed reading, and the first one could be that you have not picked the right book. Reading can be compared to falling in love. All it takes is finding the right book at the right time. Only after reading a variety of genres did I discover my favorite types of reads. Some genres I like are non-fiction, autobiography & memoir, self-help, philosophy, and psychology. Don't feel guilty for giving up a book you didn't enjoy.
Check out the blurb. Most people need to pay more attention to the blurb, a brief book description usually found on the back cover. I always recommend reading it and getting an overview of the book’s content; this can help you decide whether you should read the book.
Start with short books. Getting into bookworm mode is easy with simple and quick reads. It can increase reading confidence and develop a more profound love of reading. For example, you can start with short stories and nonfiction, like The ‘Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho or 'The Four Agreements’ by Miguel Ruiz. They always have life lessons behind them that you can learn and enjoy.
Always carry a book with you. Having a book or a reading device is helpful whenever you are out and about. You can grab your book instead of your phone on your lunch break or while waiting anywhere. I use a Kindle for reading most of the time. I still love a good old-fashioned physical book and the feeling of it, but my e-reader has allowed me to nearly double my reading goal yearly. It's easy to buy new books anytime and carry thousands of them in my bag with a Kindle. I have a whole library to choose from with just one click. I love it
Create a reading environment. Make a cozy reading area at home where you can enjoy a nice book in silence and enhance it with a hot cup of coffee or herbal tea. Reading in bed or early in the morning is my favorite. In bed, it helps me sleep even better.
Log your reading. Keep a log of your daily readings to track your progress over time. This can be a very effective way to improve your daily reading habits, particularly if you are trying to reach a specific reading goal for the next few months or years.
Take a break. According to studies, taking a break while reading can improve concentration. No matter what you are reading, it's wise to pause every once in a while. Try taking a walk or sitting without doing anything for a bit to return to your book fresh and excited.
Make reading a yearly goal. Setting a yearly goal can also motivate you to maintain a regular reading habit. Those who only read a little may want to set a smaller goal, such as reading 6-12 books a year, which is pretty doable.
Make it social. Join a book discussion group in your area or online. There is nothing better than joining a book club to keep you motivated and excited about reading. It's really fun to share your passion for books with others. You can find many bookish communities online that are enjoyable and helpful, such as LibraryThing, Booklikes, and Goodreads. You can connect with some of these communities to learn about the latest books and participate in discussions. I would love to connect with you on Goodreads and discuss some of your favorite books. I firmly believe that reading is one of the most effective ways for one to grow as a person. Let's nourish and care for our minds and souls by reading regularly.
